Road Trip Diary: Hockey Experience Not Limited to Verizon Center

November 8: Wachovia Center, Philadelphia PA

After the
Walk Now for Autism, it’s on the road north to the City of Brotherly Love with TM to see the Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Philadelphia Flyers. It has been the first road trip for this blogger since the Washington Capitals @ Carolina Hurricanes in March.

The trip had been planned for about two months—to see
Vinny Lecavalier, Olie Kolzig, and the Lightning at the Wachovia Center then at Verizon Center.

The Flyers might have dominated the first period but the Lightning
triumphed 2–1.

November 15: Prudential Center, Newark, NJ

The Washington Capitals Fan Club hosted a road trip to the Prudential Center (aka “The Rock”) to see the Capitals battle the New Jerseys Devils. The Capitals had hosted and defeated the Devils at home the night before.

The bus comprised of about 47 diehard Caps, including one visiting from Tampa, decked out in
Capitals gear and one Jersey native in a Devils T-shirt.

The trip was all about hockey. On the ride to The Rock, the group watched
NHL: All Access 2008 and NHL: Just Like Me, and the Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers on the ride home.

The Prudential Center is a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment arena with many amenities including a leaky roof under heavy rainfall and half-empty seats. Guest Services moved the Fan Club from the upper level to lower level sections after the first period.

The section was alas adjacent to the Rhythm-less Nation. While
teams with spirit squads or scantily-clad Ice Girls miss the mark, mercifully the Capitals’ Red Rockers don’t wear child-size tops and subject the spectators to some optimistically highly entertaining routines littered with more than a few missteps.

Nevertheless, while the Devils struggled at the Phone Booth, the team dominated at The Rock. The Capitals earned a point thanks to
Alex Ovechkin’s last-second goal at 19:59 in the third period, but the team lost 6–5 after the shootout with the Devils’ Zach Parise notching the lone goal.

Would the outcome have been better if the Capitals hadn’t scratched NHL leading scorer Alexander Semin [despite Semin skating during warmup]?

By and large, these road trips have been a lot of fun and opportunity to visit other arenas to see hockey games.

All that is needed now is another great
digital camera to capture the moments.

The Rock is a great facility and kudos to the Devils' guest services for relocating our entire group of Caps fans from out of the rain. Thankfully the Caps salvaged a point from performance that was somewhat lacking- mainly on the defensive end. But all-in-all a great game to travel to.

Thanks for the shout-out on the awesome bus trip! You're a great seat-mate! Look forward to doing it again! Loved your commentary on the talentless dance chicks too! They were an embarassment to the Devs! Had a wonderful weekend with you and the rest of the Caps crew! See you next month!! Come down to Florida and see me and Olie soon!!! xOVxOVx
